Updates from April, 2009

  • Welcome to Voce Chris Thilk

So my colleague Josh Hallett just posted the news that we’ve hired Chris Thilk, and yeah, to say the least, everyone on our team is very fired up to be working with him.

Chris was one of the early social media strategists at MWW Group, working with folks like Tom Biro on the Nikon and Samsung accounts and really helped shape what became the DialogueMedia digital division. For a long time now, Chris has also been the guy behind the guy blogging at Movie Marketing Madness. I think Josh said it best with:

“[We've] always had a list of folks in the industry that we really respect. Folks that walk the walk, more than they talk the talk, and Chris Thilk is one of them.”

It’s true. While there’s no shortage of social media experts these days, finding people who actually have solid experience managing both the strategic and tactical parts of big brand social media programs, is, well, almost impossible to find. With Chris, we found both. And he’s already busy working on Comcast, Intel and a few client wins we’ve yet to talk about.

The addition and news of Chris marks the first in a sequence of announcements we have quietly in the works. More to come…

    Groundswell

So, you may have noticed there’s this little lime green book bubbling up everywhere called “Groundswell,” and my hunch is that if you read this blog, you’re probably already reading this book too. At very least, you’re familiar with the book’s co-authors, Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff, both are long-time industry analysts for Forrester Research, and generally speaking, are pretty smart folks when it comes to analyzing the adoption and application of social media in business.

It’s with this in mind that SNCR and the organizers of Third Thursday - Silicon Valley have invited Charlene to come in and speak at our next meetup about what the Groundswell is, how it’s impacting businesses today, and perhaps highlight some of the recent research and case studies she and Josh share in their book.

If you’re in the midst of formulating your own social media strategy, this is one of those must-attend talks.

Our discussion with Charlene is set for next Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Palo Alto. Details are on the Third Thursday Meetup page. We’ve just about reached our capacity max for this event, so please RSVP soon if you’d like to join us; oh, and bring your Groundswell book.

  • Podtech Talks “Pressroom of the Future”

    mike manuel 8:55 am on May 18, 2007 | 0 Permalink

T3logos_3Another great Third Thursday meetup last night. Our guest speaker was Podtech’s John Furrier who, among other things, shared his thoughts on the recent Podtech BlogHuas at CES and discussed how projects like this are indicative of bigger possibilities for newsrooms at special events. Jeremiah Owyang captured a live stream of our talk, check it out.

Thanks to all that attended. June’s meetup will be on the topic of citizen journalism - we think. Details will be posted to the Third Thursday Meetup page shortly. BTW, if you have ideas for speakers or topics, let me know, we’ve got some great stuff on the horizon, but we’re always looking for new topics, new voices….

  • Weckerle Joins Voce Nation

    mike manuel 8:42 am on March 20, 2007 | 8 Permalink

For those who have already picked up on the trail of breadcrumbs, this’ll come as no surprise, for everyone else, a quick welcome here for my new Voce colleague and blogger chum, Andrea Weckerle.

Andrea gave up a successful new media consulting gig and the comfort of her east coast roots, to come join us here in Kalifornia as I and others inside Voce continue to groom and grow our own new media expertise, along with new clients and a new office.

It’s a big win and I’m fired up we’ll be working together, there is much to share and learn.

    Welcome Andrea!

  • Third Thursday: Social Media Measurement

    mike manuel 11:32 pm on February 12, 2007 | 2 Permalink

T3logos_3Just a quick Third Thursday update: Measurement has long been the achilles heal of communication and marketing programs so we’re returning to Palo Alto this week to talk about measurement - specifically, social media measurement - with folks from Nielsen Buzzmetrics, Buzzlogic, OpenMind, and Biz360. SNCR’s Jen McClure will be leading the discussion.

Details are on the meetup page, hope to see you there.

  • Del Conte Left TechCrunch for PodShow

Interesting, Adam Curry says Natalie Del Conte is joining PodShow. A friend mentioned this to me, I gave it a listen, it appears to be true. Curry confirms it around minute 28 of the Dec. 29th DSC. Hrm….

  • Third Thursday: Open Source Marketing

    mike manuel 5:14 pm on September 20, 2006 | 1 Permalink

    T3logos_3

For our next Third Thursday meetup (tomorrow night), we’ll be talking about open source marketing.

We’ve invited Asa Dotzler, community coordinator for Mozilla, to join us and talk about his work on the Spread Firefox project.

For many marketers, especially those in tech, the Spread Firefox project is considered *the* case study in successful customer evangelism and word-of-mouth marketing.  There’s much, much more, however, behind the success of Firefox than savvy marketing strategies and tactics, and we’ll be talking with Asa about what it takes to cultivate and empower communities, also what role social media plays in the Spread Firefox campaign.

Meetup details are here if you’re interested in attending.  Hope to see you there!

  • 3rd Third Thursday Next Thursday

    mike manuel 3:01 pm on June 7, 2006 | 3 Permalink

T3logos_2 A week from today we’ll be hosting our next Third Thursday meetup at F&As in downtown Palo Alto. Early response and interest in this meetup series has been amazing, we currently have 200+ PR, marketing and business folks registered through our Meetup page, and we’ve been averaging about 75 attendees per event so far.

We’ve also started talking with a few folks outside of the Bay Area (and the country actually) who have expressed interest in bringing Third Thursday-like meetups to their cities, which is pretty cool, given we’re just getting off the ground with this thing. Hopefully we’ll have more to share on this soon.

Next Thursday we’re going to talk about community building strategies and tactics with folks from SAP and Linden Labs (the makers of Second Life). Eastwick’s Giovanni Rodriguez will be leading the discussion. We’ll be kicking things off at 7PM, details are on the Meetup page. Hope to see you there….

Update: Dave Roberts, “Community Cruise Director” for Vyatta will be joining our panel.

  • Edelman Acquires A&R

    mike manuel 4:59 pm on May 25, 2006 | 0 Permalink

The Edelman/A&R news has raised some eyebrows, to say the least, it makes me wonder how much longer their recent advances with social media and now their beachhead in the Silicon Valley tech market, will go unattested by the big conglomerates.

  • PodTech Debuts PodSummit

    mike manuel 9:04 am on April 20, 2006 | 0 Permalink

The good folks at PodTech continue to grow their InfoTalk Network. Today they announced a new weekly podcast series called PodSummit which will profile technology leaders and entrepreneurs.

Without question, as new media business models continue to evolve, like PodTech, they’re opening up all sorts of interesting new opportunities for marketers and advertisers, and I’ll add communicators too, because *content* is what will make or break these new channels.

  • Michael Arrington, TechCrunch, Guest Speaker at April 20th Third Thursday

    mike manuel 6:35 pm on April 10, 2006 | 3 Permalink

    T3logos

Following up on my previous post, next Thursday, April 20th, will be our kick-off Third Thursday meetup, and I’m fired up to say our first guest speaker will be Michael Arrington.

Arrington is the founder of edgeio and the author of TechCrunch, a highly influential blog about Web 2.0 trends and technology. Arrington will be joining us to talk about the do’s and don’ts of engaging the blogging community, where TechCrunch has had success working with companies, along with any insights, anecdotes, advice he might have for using new media in PR and marketing programs.

This meetup will be held at Fanny & Alexander’s in downtown Palo Alto from 6:30-8:30PM on the back patio (discussion to begin 7-ish). Attendance is free, but please register in advance via our meetup page. We plan to capture and share each meetup via the typical outlets (e.g., podcast, blog entries, photos, tags, etc.), so if you can’t make it, no worries, we’ll do our best to extend the reach of Third Thursday online. In fact, if you can help with any of this, please let me know.

If back channel interest and enthusiasm for this meetup thus far is any indication of how necessary this sort of thing is, Third Thursday should be a very valuable event for local PR and marketing folks.

See you next Thursday, the first round’s on these guys.
